Benton family Leo Frank papers

Scope and Content

This collection contains documents pertaining to the 1913 murder of Mary Phagan and the murder trial of Leo Frank. Newspaper articles and a dissertation describe the details of the trial and Frank's lynching as well as new witness for the case and the push for a pardon for Frank in the 1980s. Also included are genealogy papers on the Phagan family.

There are letters of sympathy and support sent to Leo Frank and Lucille Selig Frank throughout his incarceration and after his death. Letters to the Franks are often written by many of the same people and share similar content. This collection contains material collected by and about Tom Watson Brown. There are reviews and critiques of the television documentary The Murder of Mary Phagan that aired on NBC in 1988; speeches given by Brown at the Confederate Memorial Day service in Stone Mountain, Georgia in 1978, and about the Leo Frank trial, given in 1982; and an assortment of tickets from sporting and entertainment events primarily from the Atlanta area.
